Data De-Anonymization

Meaning

Data de-anonymization is the process of reversing the anonymization techniques applied to a dataset, thereby linking previously anonymous records back to their specific individuals. This procedure represents a significant risk to patient privacy and confidentiality in the health and wellness space, especially when dealing with sensitive hormonal or genetic information. Although anonymization aims to protect identities, the combination of multiple data points can often allow for re-identification, posing ethical and legal challenges for clinical data management. Robust security protocols are necessary to prevent this re-identification.
