D2 Receptor Density

Meaning

D2 Receptor Density is a quantitative measure of the concentration of Dopamine Receptor Type 2 binding sites expressed on the surface of target cells, primarily within the central nervous system and the pituitary gland. This density is a critical determinant of dopaminergic neurotransmission efficiency and the tissue’s sensitivity to dopamine signaling. Alterations in this receptor density are implicated in the pathophysiology of various neurological and psychiatric conditions, including the regulation of prolactin secretion.
