Cytokine Networks

Meaning

Cytokine Networks describe the complex, integrated system of small signaling proteins—cytokines, chemokines, and interleukins—that mediate communication between cells, primarily governing immune responses, inflammation, and hematopoiesis. In endocrinology, these networks are crucial because they directly interface with and modulate the hypothalamic-pituitary axes, profoundly influencing hormonal secretion and receptor sensitivity. A dysregulated cytokine network often underlies chronic inflammation, which is a key driver of hormonal imbalances and metabolic dysfunction.
