Cytokine Dysregulation

Meaning

Cytokine Dysregulation refers to a profound imbalance in the tightly controlled production, timely release, or functional signaling of cytokines, which are small, critical proteins mediating cell-to-cell communication in immune responses and inflammation. This dysregulated state can manifest as either a detrimental overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines or a critical deficiency in anti-inflammatory and regulatory cytokines, thereby disrupting the body’s delicate homeostatic equilibrium. Clinically, this imbalance is a central and actionable feature in the progression of autoimmune diseases, chronic inflammatory states, and the pathology of accelerated aging.
