Cytochrome P450scc

Meaning

Cytochrome P450 side-chain cleavage enzyme, or P450scc, is a critical mitochondrial enzyme responsible for the initial and rate-limiting step in the synthesis of all steroid hormones, including cortisol, aldosterone, testosterone, and estrogens. This enzyme, also known as cholesterol side-chain cleavage enzyme (CYP11A1), catalyzes the conversion of cholesterol into pregnenolone. Its proper function is absolutely essential for the entire endocrine system, as pregnenolone is the foundational precursor for all downstream steroidogenesis.
