Cytochrome P450c17α

Meaning

Cytochrome P450c17α, formally known as CYP17A1, is a critical enzyme in the steroidogenesis pathway, a member of the Cytochrome P450 superfamily. This single enzyme catalyzes two distinct, sequential reactions: 17α-hydroxylase activity and 17,20-lyase activity. These functions are essential for converting progestins into androgens, specifically transforming pregnenolone and progesterone into dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and androstenedione, respectively. Its activity is tightly regulated in the adrenal glands and gonads, playing a central role in the production of all sex steroids and cortisol.
