Cystatin C

Meaning

Cystatin C is a small protein belonging to the cystatin superfamily of cysteine protease inhibitors, which is produced by virtually all nucleated cells in the human body. Unlike creatinine, its serum concentration is largely independent of muscle mass, diet, and sex, making it a highly sensitive and reliable biomarker for assessing glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Monitoring Cystatin C levels provides a precise measure of kidney function, which is particularly valuable in diagnosing and tracking early-stage renal impairment. It offers a superior alternative to traditional markers in certain clinical populations.
