CYP3A4

Meaning

CYP3A4 is a critical enzyme belonging to the cytochrome P450 family, predominantly expressed in the liver and the small intestine. This enzyme is responsible for metabolizing approximately fifty percent of all clinically used pharmaceuticals, as well as numerous endogenous compounds, including many steroid hormones. As a primary detoxification pathway, its activity level significantly dictates the clearance rate of various substances from the body. Genetic variations and external factors, such as dietary components or drug interactions, can substantially alter CYP3A4 function, leading to variability in hormone and medication efficacy and potential toxicity. Clinical assessment of drug-drug or drug-hormone interactions often hinges on understanding this enzyme’s metabolic capacity.
