CYP3A4 Polymorphism

Meaning

CYP3A4 polymorphism refers to the common, naturally occurring variations, or single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), in the gene that encodes the Cytochrome P450 3A4 enzyme. This enzyme is a major hepatic enzyme responsible for metabolizing a vast array of endogenous and exogenous compounds, including many steroid hormones and therapeutic drugs. These genetic variations can lead to significant inter-individual differences in enzyme activity, classifying individuals as poor, intermediate, extensive, or ultra-rapid metabolizers. Understanding a patient’s CYP3A4 status is critical in hormonal health for accurately predicting drug efficacy, adjusting personalized hormone replacement dosages, and mitigating the risk of potential adverse drug reactions.
