CYP3A4 Enzyme

Meaning

A critical member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes, predominantly expressed in the liver and small intestine, responsible for metabolizing a vast array of endogenous compounds and exogenous substances. This single enzyme is involved in the biotransformation of approximately 50% of all marketed pharmaceutical drugs, making it highly susceptible to drug-drug and drug-food interactions. Its function is vital for the detoxification and clearance of many steroid hormones and environmental toxins.
