CYP2D6 Enzyme

Meaning

CYP2D6 is a crucial member of the cytochrome P450 enzyme superfamily, primarily involved in the hepatic metabolism of a substantial fraction of clinically administered drugs and endogenous compounds. This enzyme’s genetic variability is a major determinant of inter-individual differences in drug clearance, leading to classifications like poor, intermediate, extensive, and ultrarapid metabolizers. In hormonal health, its activity can influence the effective concentration and half-life of certain medications that may interact with hormone therapy, though it is less central to steroid hormone metabolism than other CYP enzymes.
