CYP1B1 Enzyme

Meaning

CYP1B1 Enzyme, or Cytochrome P450 1B1, is a critical member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of monooxygenases, primarily recognized for its role in steroid hormone metabolism, particularly estrogen. This enzyme is responsible for catalyzing the hydroxylation of estrogens at the C-4 position, producing 4-hydroxyestrone and 4-hydroxyestradiol, which are catechol estrogen metabolites. These specific metabolites are often considered less favorable in the context of hormonal balance due to their potential to generate reactive intermediates. Genetic polymorphisms in the CYP1B1 gene can significantly alter an individual’s capacity to process and detoxify estrogens, influencing long-term hormonal health and risk profiles.
