CYP1A1

Meaning

CYP1A1 is a specific member of the Cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes, a group of monooxygenases predominantly expressed in the liver and other tissues, including the gut and lungs. This enzyme plays a crucial role in the Phase I detoxification pathway, specifically metabolizing various exogenous compounds, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and endogenous substrates, including certain estrogen metabolites. Genetic polymorphisms in CYP1A1 can alter an individual’s detoxification capacity, thereby influencing their hormonal milieu and susceptibility to environmental toxins.
