CYP1A1

Meaning

CYP1A1, or Cytochrome P450 1A1, is a gene that codes for an enzyme primarily involved in Phase I detoxification pathways within the human body. This enzyme is a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily, a critical group of proteins responsible for metabolizing a wide array of endogenous and exogenous compounds. Its principal function involves the hydroxylation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), environmental pollutants, and certain steroid hormones, initiating their chemical transformation for subsequent elimination or further metabolism.
