CYP Enzymes

Meaning

CYP Enzymes, or Cytochrome P450 enzymes, represent a large superfamily of hemoproteins that function predominantly as monooxygenases, essential for metabolizing an extensive array of endogenous and exogenous compounds. These enzymes are indispensable for both detoxification processes and the biosynthesis of vital steroid hormones. Their activity is highly sensitive to genetic polymorphisms, nutritional factors, and pharmaceutical agents, which can lead to significant inter-individual variability in metabolism.
