CYP Enzyme Variations

Meaning

CYP Enzyme Variations describe the genetically determined polymorphisms, or common genetic variants, found within the genes encoding the cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme superfamily, which are critical for metabolizing numerous endogenous compounds, including all steroid hormones, and a vast array of exogenous drugs. These variations result in significant differences in enzyme activity, clinically categorizing individuals as ultra-rapid, extensive, intermediate, or poor metabolizers. Such inherent genetic differences profoundly impact both the stability of hormonal balance and the therapeutic efficacy and safety profile of many administered medications.
