Cyclic GMP

Meaning

Cyclic Guanosine Monophosphate, or cyclic GMP (cGMP), is a critical intracellular second messenger molecule synthesized from guanosine triphosphate (GTP) by the enzyme guanylate cyclase. It functions as a key mediator for various extracellular signals, translating hormonal and paracrine cues into specific cellular responses. In the vascular system, cGMP is fundamentally important for smooth muscle relaxation and subsequent vasodilation. Its concentration within the cell is tightly regulated by both synthesis and degradation by phosphodiesterase enzymes.
