Cutaneous Biology

Meaning

Cutaneous biology is the scientific discipline dedicated to the study of the structure, function, and pathology of the skin, encompassing the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous layers, as well as associated appendages like hair and glands. This field investigates the complex cellular and molecular processes that maintain the skin’s barrier function, wound healing capacity, immune surveillance, and aesthetic integrity. It is fundamentally intertwined with systemic endocrinology, as the skin is both a target and a site of hormone action.
