CTX

Meaning

CTX, or C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen, is a specific biochemical marker used clinically to assess the rate of bone resorption. This peptide fragment is released into the circulation when osteoclasts break down mature type I collagen, the primary structural protein in bone. Measuring serum or urine CTX provides a quantifiable snapshot of bone turnover activity, which is crucial for monitoring conditions like osteoporosis and the efficacy of anti-resorptive therapies.
