CRH Neurons

Meaning

CRH Neurons, or Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone neurons, are specialized neuroendocrine cells primarily located within the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus in the brain. These cells synthesize and release CRH, a critical neuropeptide that serves as the principal regulator of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, the body’s central stress response system. The functional integrity of these neurons is paramount for maintaining systemic homeostasis and regulating the hormonal cascade that culminates in cortisol release from the adrenal glands. Dysregulation of CRH neuron activity is a central feature in many chronic stress-related disorders and mood imbalances.
