COX-2 Inhibitors

Meaning

COX-2 inhibitors represent a specific class of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) designed to selectively block the cyclooxygenase-2 enzyme, thereby reducing pain and inflammation with a theoretically lower incidence of gastrointestinal side effects compared to non-selective NSAIDs. These agents target the enzyme predominantly induced at sites of inflammation, contrasting with the constitutively expressed COX-1 enzyme. Clinically, they are utilized for managing chronic pain conditions, such as osteoarthritis, where long-term anti-inflammatory therapy is necessary. Their selective action was intended to improve the therapeutic index of anti-inflammatory treatment.
