Cortisol Shunt

Meaning

Cortisol shunt is a concept in steroidogenesis referring to the metabolic redirection of hormonal precursors, particularly progesterone and pregnenolone, away from the desired production of cortisol toward other steroid hormones like mineralocorticoids or androgens. This biochemical diversion occurs primarily within the adrenal cortex when specific enzymatic activity is altered or blocked. The resulting imbalance can lead to clinical symptoms of cortisol insufficiency alongside an excess of shunted hormones, profoundly impacting the endocrine profile.
