Cortisol Secretion Patterns

Meaning

The characteristic temporal profile of cortisol release from the adrenal cortex, a pattern typically exhibiting a distinct circadian rhythm throughout a 24-hour period. This rhythm is characterized by a peak in the early morning, a steady decline throughout the day, and a nadir late at night, known as the Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR). Clinical assessment of these patterns provides critical insight into the functional status of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and an individual’s stress adaptation capacity.
