Cortisol Rhythmicity

Meaning

Cortisol Rhythmicity describes the predictable, diurnal fluctuation in the secretion rate of the glucocorticoid hormone cortisol by the adrenal cortex. This rhythm typically exhibits high levels shortly after awakening (the Cortisol Awakening Response) and a nadir around midnight. Maintaining this precise temporal pattern is essential for energy mobilization, immune modulation, and appropriate stress response calibration. Dysregulation, such as a flattened or inverted rhythm, signifies significant HPA axis dysfunction. This pattern reflects the body’s adaptation to cyclical demands.
