Cortisol Rhythm Dampening

Meaning

Cortisol Rhythm Dampening describes a pathological or stress-induced alteration where the characteristic peaks and troughs of the cortisol diurnal variation become significantly flattened or blunted. This physiological state is marked by a reduced Cortisol Awakening Response and often persistently elevated levels throughout the evening and night, resulting in a loss of the healthy, robust amplitude. Clinically, dampening is associated with chronic stress and HPA axis fatigue.
