Cortisol Response to Incentives

Meaning

This describes the alteration in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity, specifically glucocorticoid secretion, in reaction to perceived external rewards or motivational stimuli. A positive incentive should ideally produce a measured, transient elevation in cortisol, reflecting appropriate engagement and alertness. However, chronic incentive structures can lead to dysregulated feedback signaling within the stress response system.
