Cortisol Response Elements

Meaning

Cortisol Response Elements (CREs) are specific short DNA sequences located in the promoter regions of target genes, serving as direct binding sites for the activated glucocorticoid receptor complex. Upon cortisol binding, the receptor translocates to the nucleus and attaches to these CREs, directly modulating the transcription rate of the associated genes. These elements are central to the body’s precise physiological response to stress, inflammation, and metabolic regulation.
