Cortisol Resistance Mechanisms

Meaning

Cortisol resistance mechanisms refer to the physiological processes that lead to a reduced sensitivity of target tissues to the biological actions of cortisol, despite circulating levels being normal or even elevated. This state mirrors insulin resistance, where the hormone is present but its signaling pathway is impaired at the cellular receptor level. Clinically, this diminished cellular response necessitates higher levels of cortisol to achieve the same effect, contributing to systemic inflammatory and metabolic dysfunction. It represents a failure of effective glucocorticoid signaling.
