Cortisol Modulation through Sleep

Meaning

The essential role of a regular and restorative sleep cycle in regulating the pulsatile secretion and overall diurnal rhythm of the stress hormone cortisol. Proper sleep ensures the characteristic low cortisol levels during the night, followed by the necessary morning surge, or Cortisol Awakening Response, for optimal energy and alertness. Dysregulated sleep patterns can disrupt the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, leading to chronic endocrine stress.
