Cortisol-Epinephrine Mismatch

Meaning

The Cortisol-Epinephrine Mismatch describes a state of dysregulation within the stress response system where the adrenal glands exhibit a discordant pattern of glucocorticoid (cortisol) and catecholamine (epinephrine/adrenaline) release. Typically, acute stress elicits a coordinated, rapid surge in both hormones. A mismatch occurs when one response is blunted or excessive relative to the other, or when the timing of their diurnal release is uncoupled, signaling chronic stress adaptation or adrenal fatigue. This endocrine phenomenon often underlies persistent fatigue, anxiety, and impaired metabolic regulation.
