Cortisol Elevation

Meaning

Cortisol Elevation refers to a sustained or pathologically high concentration of the glucocorticoid hormone cortisol circulating in the bloodstream, which frequently exceeds the normal, healthy diurnal rhythm. Cortisol, synthesized and secreted by the adrenal cortex under the precise regulation of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, is the body’s principal stress hormone. Chronic elevation is a serious clinical concern because it promotes metabolic dysregulation, compromises immune function, accelerates bone demineralization, and induces adverse psychological and cognitive effects. Proper clinical assessment requires careful consideration of the pattern, timing, and magnitude of the elevation.
