Cortisol Dysregulation

Meaning

Cortisol dysregulation refers to an atypical pattern or inappropriate secretion of cortisol, the primary glucocorticoid hormone produced by the adrenal glands, deviating from its normal physiological rhythm and concentration in response to internal or external stimuli. This condition indicates an imbalance within the body’s stress response system, specifically involving the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, rather than a complete absence or severe excess. It often presents as either persistently elevated, chronically suppressed, or an erratic diurnal cortisol profile, disrupting systemic homeostasis.
