Cortisol Burden

Meaning

Cortisol burden represents the cumulative physiological stress placed upon the body’s metabolic and immune systems due to prolonged or excessive exposure to the glucocorticoid hormone cortisol. This state is not simply a transient elevation but reflects the overall, sustained impact of chronic activation of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis. A high cortisol burden can significantly disrupt metabolic function, suppress immune response, and negatively affect hormonal balance across multiple endocrine axes. It is a key indicator of allostatic load.
