Cortisol Blunting

Meaning

Cortisol Blunting describes an attenuated or diminished physiological response of cortisol secretion to a specific stimulus, such as acute psychological stress or physical exertion, resulting in a lower than expected peak concentration. This phenomenon is often observed in individuals with chronic, long-term stress exposure or certain chronic health conditions, reflecting a complex adaptation or potential dysfunction within the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. While distinct from frank adrenal insufficiency, it represents a maladaptive pattern of the stress response system that impacts metabolic health.
