Cortisol Awakening Response

Meaning

The Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR) is the characteristic, rapid surge in adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-stimulated cortisol secretion that occurs within 30 to 45 minutes following waking from nocturnal sleep. This predictable physiological event reflects the dynamic interplay between the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the hypothalamus, and the adrenal glands. It serves as a functional measure of HPA axis reactivity and resilience.
