Cortisol and Glucose Homeostasis

Meaning

The delicate physiological balance maintained by the stress hormone cortisol in conjunction with insulin and glucagon to ensure stable blood glucose levels, a process critical for consistent energy supply to the brain and body. Cortisol, a glucocorticoid, primarily acts to raise blood glucose, while insulin works to lower it, creating a necessary counter-regulatory system. Chronic disruption of this homeostatic mechanism can lead to sustained hyperglycemia and eventual insulin resistance.
