Cortisol and Androgens

Meaning

Cortisol and androgens represent two distinct yet interconnected classes of steroid hormones produced primarily by the adrenal cortex, which collectively exert broad influence over human physiology, stress response, and sexual characteristics. Cortisol, a glucocorticoid, is the principal stress hormone that regulates metabolism and suppresses inflammation. Androgens, such as dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfate (DHEA-S), are sex hormone precursors that contribute to libido, muscle mass, and bone density in both sexes. Their balance is particularly relevant in conditions like adrenal fatigue or congenital adrenal hyperplasia, where their production pathways are intertwined and can become dysregulated.
