Cortisol and Allostatic Load

Meaning

Cortisol is the primary glucocorticoid hormone released by the adrenal glands in response to activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, functioning to mobilize energy and suppress non-essential systems during stress. Allostatic load is the cumulative physiological wear and tear on the body that results from chronic, repeated efforts to adapt to stressors. When the stress response is repeatedly activated or fails to shut off, the sustained exposure to cortisol and other stress mediators drives this allostatic load, leading to systemic dysregulation and increased disease risk.
