Corticotroph

Meaning

A corticotroph is a specialized, basophilic cell type located exclusively within the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland, responsible for synthesizing and secreting Adrenocorticotropic Hormone, or ACTH. These cells are a key, central component of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, playing a critical role in the body’s neuroendocrine stress response and the regulation of systemic cortisol levels. Their secretory activity is precisely and tightly controlled by Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone (CRH) originating from the hypothalamus. Understanding corticotroph function is essential for diagnosing disorders like Cushing’s disease.
