Coronary Heart Disease

Meaning

Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), also known as Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), is a common and serious cardiovascular condition characterized by the accumulation of atherosclerotic plaque within the coronary arteries. This buildup narrows the arteries, restricting blood flow to the myocardium, or heart muscle, which can ultimately lead to angina, myocardial infarction, or heart failure. Hormonal imbalances, particularly those involving sex steroids and thyroid hormones, are increasingly recognized as contributing factors to its development and progression.
