Coronary Artery Calcium

Meaning

Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) refers to the presence and quantification of calcified atherosclerotic plaque within the walls of the coronary arteries, measured typically by a non-contrast computed tomography (CT) scan. This score serves as a highly specific and independent biomarker for the total burden of coronary atherosclerosis, reflecting a cumulative history of plaque formation. Clinically, a high CAC score indicates an increased future risk of cardiovascular events, necessitating aggressive risk factor modification and therapeutic intervention.
