Core Engagement

Meaning

Core Engagement describes the conscious and reflexive co-activation of the deep trunk musculature—including the transversus abdominis, pelvic floor, diaphragm, and multifidus—to create a stable, rigid central cylinder for the spine. This neuromuscular coordination is essential for efficient force transfer between the upper and lower extremities, serving as the physiological foundation for all movement and posture. Proper engagement is not merely about strength but about timing and synergy, directly impacting spinal load, balance, and the functional capacity of the entire body. It is a critical component of musculoskeletal health and injury prevention.
