Container Closure Integrity

Meaning

Container Closure Integrity (CCI) is the critical attribute of a pharmaceutical packaging system that maintains a sterile, hermetic seal throughout a drug product’s entire shelf life. This integrity ensures that the primary container and its closure mechanism prevent the ingress of external contaminants, including microorganisms, gases like oxygen, or moisture. For injectable hormone therapies, which must remain sterile, a verified CCI system is an absolute requirement for patient safety and therapeutic efficacy. Failure of CCI directly compromises the drug’s quality, strength, and purity.
