Conn’s Syndrome

Meaning

Conn’s Syndrome, clinically known as primary hyperaldosteronism, is an endocrine disorder characterized by the excessive and autonomous secretion of the mineralocorticoid hormone aldosterone from the adrenal glands. This hormonal overproduction is independent of the body’s normal regulatory system, the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). The condition is a significant, yet frequently underdiagnosed, cause of secondary hypertension, typically presenting with elevated blood pressure, low potassium levels (hypokalemia), and metabolic alkalosis. Early diagnosis is crucial because it represents a potentially curable form of hypertension.
