Connective Tissue

Meaning

Connective tissue is a fundamental biological tissue that provides structure, support, and protection for the body’s organs and systems, essentially holding the body together. It is composed of cells, such as fibroblasts and adipocytes, embedded within an extracellular matrix of protein fibers like collagen and elastin, and ground substance. Found ubiquitously throughout the body, it includes bone, cartilage, fat, blood, tendons, and ligaments, playing a critical role in mechanical integrity and biochemical signaling. Hormonal health profoundly influences the quality and integrity of connective tissue, affecting skin elasticity, joint health, and overall musculoskeletal function.
