Competitive Antagonism

Meaning

Competitive Antagonism is a pharmacological phenomenon where an antagonist molecule binds reversibly to the same receptor site as the endogenous agonist, thereby preventing the agonist from exerting its biological effect. This direct competition for the binding site means that increasing the concentration of the natural agonist can overcome the blockade imposed by the antagonist. Clinically, this mechanism is crucial for many hormone-blocking therapies, such as those targeting estrogen or androgen receptors to manage specific conditions.
