Comedogenicity

Meaning

Comedogenicity is the inherent, measurable capacity of a substance or cosmetic ingredient to initiate or exacerbate the formation of comedones, which are the primary non-inflammatory lesions of acne. In clinical practice, this characteristic is carefully assessed to predict an ingredient’s likelihood of clogging the pilosebaceous unit. Individuals with hormonally sensitive skin or those predisposed to acne must consider the comedogenicity rating of topical products to effectively mitigate their dermatological risk.
