Co-Repressors

Meaning

Co-repressors are a class of nuclear proteins that function to actively suppress the transcription of specific genes by interacting with gene-specific transcription factors, such as nuclear hormone receptors. Critically, co-repressors do not bind directly to the DNA themselves but instead act as essential molecular intermediaries that recruit other enzymatic machinery to silence gene activity. They are indispensable for the precise temporal and spatial control of gene expression within the cell.
