Clotting Factors

Meaning

Clotting factors are a series of specialized proteins, primarily synthesized in the liver, that circulate in the bloodstream in an inactive, zymogen form. These factors are essential components of the coagulation cascade, a complex biochemical process necessary to stop bleeding following vascular injury. They are systematically designated by Roman numerals, such as Factor I (Fibrinogen) and Factor VIII. Their balanced function is vital for maintaining hemostasis, preventing both excessive bleeding and inappropriate clot formation.
