Closed Loop Control Systems

Meaning

Closed Loop Control Systems refer to physiological or therapeutic regulatory mechanisms that continuously monitor an output variable and automatically adjust an input variable to maintain a desired setpoint. This contrasts with open-loop systems which provide a fixed input regardless of the resulting output measurement. In endocrinology, this system is perfectly exemplified by the body’s sophisticated feedback loops, such as the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis or the regulation of blood glucose by insulin. Clinical interventions often aim to restore or mimic this precise, adaptive control for optimal patient outcomes and stability.
