Circulating MicroRNAs

Meaning

Circulating microRNAs, or miRNAs, are small, non-coding RNA molecules typically 19 to 25 nucleotides in length that are stably present in the bloodstream, often encapsulated within extracellular vesicles like exosomes. These molecules are critical post-transcriptional regulators of gene expression, influencing the translation of messenger RNA (mRNA) into proteins. Their concentration and specific profiles reflect the physiological and pathological status of distant cells and tissues, offering a novel class of biomarkers.
